Being an enterprising leader – that unique individual possessed with an unwavering vision, faith and resolve to lead in the face of adversity, imagine and then break new ground to create a lasting impact, and ultimately create a powerful legacy beyond themselves – however, has a shorter trajectory and timeline.

The trajectory chosen by, for instance, Roberta Bondar (Canada’s first female astronaut, first neurologist in space, and head of NASA’s space medicine program), Martin Luther King Jr. (leader of the American Civil Rights Movement), Mahatma Gandhi (the leader in unarmed revolt against violence), and Mother Theresa (founder of the Missionaries of Charity and prophet of whole-hearted and free service to the poorest of the poor), was unique. Yet, despite their unique speed and path to achieving their life’s ambitions, these leaders all had leadership attributes in common.
Each leader had an unwavering vision and passion beyond themselves. They knew they couldn’t achieve their dreams alone so they surrounded themselves with like-minded people who become followers, and some leaders in their own rights. They worked with others and systems to provoke their own thinking along with the status quo to forge change. They paced their journey with the growth of those leading the charge and sustaining the dream. They worked on themselves first to set the standard for change and modeling their belief system.
